theatre play group 2 - English

First meeting with Goethe

(by Markus, Laura, James, Sebastian)

Characters: Merck (M) -- Goethe (G) -- Schlosser (S) (Merck's brother-in-law) -- Waiter (W)

Stage: Ratskeller in Darmstadt (a bar in Darmstadt)

Scene:

(G/M/S enter the Ratskeller)

W:      Oh, the Mr. Goethe. The same table? The usual?

G:       Like always (euphoric). But we will need one more chair today for Mr. Merck

(W guides the three to a table)

(W brings an additional chair)

W:      Sirs, what’s your order?

S:       Please, my usual wine.

M:      The same as Mr. Goethe for me, please.

(W goes to bring the orders)

G:      Merck was the name?

M:      A re-merck-able easy name, don’t you think?

(W brings wine and pastries)

S:      One can say a name to merck on a list, so re-merck-able, right?

G:      Enough of these puns!

S:      By the way, how was your time in Switzerland Mr. Merck?

M:      Truly, the Swiss know how to prepare schnapps but they don’t have any clue of enjoying it. A few sips and they dance atop the tables.

(The atmosphere gets more jovial)

G:      I’ve heard you were able to get hold of a Swiss wife. Are the Swiss skirts like the Swiss liquor?

M:      My beloved was the only thing besides sensitive letters that refreshed my mind in the dreary Switzerland. If you want to experience it yourself, a few of my friends and I often arrange a circle of poets. What about a visit to my home soon?

G:      Truly much better than the dreary Frankfurt where I can only indulge myself with literature. It’s time for something new. To discuss sensitive letters with people of the mind seems tempting.

M:      Good to hear we think alike. I look forward to your participation!
